With the winter season in full swing, you may find yourself dealing with irritated skin. If you suffer from dermatitis, you are not alone. Dermatitis is a general term that describes inflamed skin. It is a common condition that has many causes and occurs in many forms. It usually involves itchy, dry skin and sometimes turns into a rash. If the itching becomes unbearable, there are a few home remedies you can practice for some relief. Here are 6 tips to manage those dermatitis breakouts:
Apply Cool Compresses
Cold compresses work wonders when it comes to relieving the itch and blisters that may arise with dermatitis. When you have inflamed skin, it can feel burning-hot to the touch. Using cold compresses such as damp clothes or ice packs can reduce the itch and swelling associated with dermatitis. Make sure that you never apply ice packs directly to the skin, and use a cloth or towel between you and the ice pack. Hold the cold compress to the affected area for 5 to 10 minutes for maximum results.
If you want to get rid of the itch, while also providing your skin with soothing properties, try adding some colloidal oatmeal to the compress. Research shows that colloidal oatmeal can act as a buffer to help maintain skin surface pH, as well as protect the skin from further irritation.
Avoid Scratching
Even though your skin itches really bad and you find a moment of relieve while scratching, it can lead to more damage and possible infection. Your finger nails house a number of bacteria, and when you scratch torn skin you expose your open wound to harmful pathogens. Scratching irritated skin only makes the situation worse. You can apply corticosteroid creams, take antihistamine pills, and use cold compresses to decrease the urge for scratching. You can also put on gloves or barrier creams that prevent you from touching your skin.
Wear Cotton Clothing
Cotton clothing is breathable and soft, making it the number one choice when you deal with dry skin. 100% cotton clothing is cool, easily washable, and allows your skin to breathe which will prevent irritated skin from developing. Other materials such as wool and polyester can lead to rashes and irritations called textile dermatitis. It’s best to avoid these when you have a breakout because your skin can react to the dyes, resins, and other chemicals used to treat the clothing.
